| | | General comments? | I've driven a 99 Chevy Silverado 5.3, Ford 2001 and 2003 4.6 and 5.4, 2002 Dodge four door with 5.9, and a 2000 Dodge 2500 with 5.9. The Chevy is powerful but the interior is lacking in quality. The Ford is built well and does most everything well but the design is dated and the 4.6 is weak and thirsty. The Ford with the 5.4 is still competitive though. The 2002 Dodge handles well for such a large vehicle but its 5.9 runs out of breath early and it guzzles fuel like nothing I??™ve driven before. It??™s just too big. The 2000 Dodge is a company truck and it??™s falling apart.
The 2001 Tundra is a fine machine delivering a smooth ride and capable handling. The engine feels like it has better low-end torque than the Ford 4.6 but less than the Chevy 5.3 and the 5.4 but after 2800 RPM it rockets with a rush of power. It??™s also much smoother in the upper revs compared to the best of the big three. I took this thing once to the track for the heck of it and it ran a 15.5 @ 87 mph in the quarter mile. Impressive for a pickup truck! The cabin is quieter than any other pickup truck I have been in and actually most sedans. The interior is a little bland but the fit and finish is top rate and the controls don??™t feel cheap like they do on some of the big three. The brakes have been trouble free now for 48k miles with the exception of the rear brake TSB that was done under warranty at about 25k miles. If given the chance I would purchase another Toyota again.
I use this truck for work and I??™ve loaded it with more than 1000 lbs. quit a few times and it handles the loads very well. | | | Previous car | 99 and 2002 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3. 2000 regular cab Dodge 3 |
